Israeli Fashion Hits The Streets

by Coolil on February 8, 2009

iLook logoStreet fashion blogs have taken the world by storm, turning everyday civilians into high-fashion models via the web. These photoblogs have sprung up in almost every major city in the world and draw attention to the unique style and feel that each city is known for in the world of high fashion. Munich has one, Istanbul has one and of course, Tel Aviv has its own street fashion blog.

The Tel Aviv photoblog, iLook, has become an underground sensation among designers and fashionistas in Israel. Last year iLook gained international recognition by winning the Streetclash international street fashion tournament. iLook went on to become part of an urban fashion and art festival during Berlin Fashion Week that exposed Tel Aviv’s cutting-edge fashion and the concept of fashion photoblogs to the rest of the world.

Displaying superior photography and profile shots that seem to expose more than just clothing, these photoblogs websites have visitors in the millions each month. New York City’s own fashion blog, The Sartorialist, is so popular that it draws comments in the hundreds with users debating over the styles that blogger Scott Schuman finds on the streets of Manhattan. Schuman’s blog has gained intense popularity in the fashion crowd which led him to be named as Time’s Magazines Top 100 Design Influencers and sparked a book deal which will come out this fall.
But as the New York Times Magazine asks in a recent article, what do these photoblogs teach about fashion? That true fashion can be found in the cut of a blazer, a tilt of a hat or the combination of patterns in a single outfit. Most of all, these street fashion blogs teach that through their inventive styles, urban pedestrians start the fashion trends rather than follow them.
